Everyone loves a great story, and it all starts with a conversation. I’m a journalist who teaches clients how to calm their nerves, come prepared, and tell their story to the media.
WHY ME
As a journalist who’s done hundreds of interviews with everyone from Academy-Award winners, to musicians achieving greatness from their furniture-less living rooms, to artists caught in the middle of a scandal, I understand the unique dilemma artists face when it’s time to talk about themselves and their work. Creating is an exhilarating but exhausting process that takes inspiration, knowledge, serious grit, and fearless self-exploration — and after an artist has done all that, they gotta talk about it?! This is daunting to many, irritating to some, and terrifying for others.
And let’s be real: We’re living in a time in which a creative’s career can be upended with a tweet and a hashtag. Nobody wants to pay outsize repercussions for a gaffe, or saying something they didn’t mean, which is why nobody should go into this media environment without coaching.
I help clients calm their nerves and get prepared. I tell them trade secrets so they can answer any question and handle any media situation. I teach them how to pivot back to their message during an interview gone awry. I engage artists to tell me their story, so that I can help them tell that story in an authentic way that will resonate with their audience and open new opportunities. In other words, artists and I find their answers and write their story before they sit down with the media, and I believe that everyone is better for it.
HOW IT WORKS
In one-on-one sessions, I …
Create an encouraging environment to build the client’s confidence and help them harness their best self.
Provide empowering techniques to calm nerves and quell public speaking fears.
Teach the client what the journalist really wants—and what they don’t.
Draw on my extensive experience to conduct an in-depth interview so the client can seek and find their answers to any question in a friendly room. During the interview, I don’t teach canned responses. Instead, I help clients find authentic answers that they can be proud of and that will resonate with their audience.
Where appropriate, teach a client how navigate cancel culture, and how to talk to the media in a manner that will answer a question without creating a larger issue.
Work with the client to and develop a message that will forge a connection between the public and a client’s work.
Tailor each session to the specific situation at hand. Is this a newbie who’s blowing up but has never done interviews before? A well-established star who can’t bear the thought of another junket? A writer or recording artist who has no idea how to answer questions like, “What made you write this book, song, or film?” An artist caught in the middle of a scandal and the sharks are circling? When it comes to our many different media environments and situations — including zooms, print, online, blogs, international press, podcasts, personal appearances, panels and more — you don’t want one size fits all.
As a result of my coaching, clients are able to represent themselves to the media with positivity, confidence and poise, while strategically getting their message out into the world.
